HYPING TORONTO’S ENTRY INTO ESPORTS

Toronto Defiant / Overactive Media & Akshon Esports | Content Producer

Toronto Defiant, one of the new teams to be added to the Overwatch League in year 2, was one of the two first Canadian city teams in Esports. With the roster composed of Korean players, it was my role to help plan out a roadmap of promotional content from roster reveals to mini-docs to introduce the players to a western audience and get the fans hyped for the boys to represent their city. This was an international project involving traveling to South Korea to shoot footage on site as well as plan in accordance the Overactive Media’s roadmap to the team’s launch.

THE FIRST REVEAL

With limited resources and filming away from our home studio, I had to overcome the challenges of project managing the shoots, editing schedule, and other duties to fulfill Akshon Esports’ contracts with Toronto Defiant. Overall, we managed to deliver two roster announcement videos, six vlog-style videos, and various photographs.

First content we delivered for Toronto Defiant. I storyboarded and shot the footage personally after scouting the location with final editing done in-house back at the Vancouver office.

THE PRODUCT

Following the initial reveal, we filmed the entire roster reveal video after the last two players finally arrived at the Bootcamp. From there, our team shot the interview and the b-rolls in order to create 6 mini short videos showing the coach’s mindset in forming the team and introducing them in his own words.

The second reveal with the remaining players revealed. This was spearheaded by a colleague while I was traveling back and forth to Korea and Canada and added the extra “Roky” scenes when I returned. It was a very cold winter in Korea so props to the players for holding it together during the shoot.

The mini-documentary series going over the coach’s mindset of choosing the specific players. While some players were well known in the scene due to their efforts in Season 1 of the Overwatch League but there were a fairly new players joining as well. The narrative also worked well due to coach’s infamous past in season 1.
